Jambo! Radio SCIO
Jambo Radio is a Glasgow-based broadcast and community development organisation serving Scotland's African and Caribbean heritage communities at a national level.
For many within these communities, Jambo Radio is more than a broadcaster, it is often the only media organisation in Scotland that speaks to them directly, in their own language, reflecting their culture and lived experience. This matters profoundly because cultural representation and a sense of belonging are foundational to integration, wellbeing and economic participation, and Jambo Radio addresses this need in a way that no other organisation in Scotland currently does.
Operating across Scotland's three primary African and Caribbean heritage population centres of Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen, Jambo Radio delivers culturally specific programming in native languages including Swahili, Pidgin, Igbo, Yoruba, French and Lingala, reaching communities that are consistently underserved by mainstream media.
In addition to its broadcast output, Jambo Radio operates an events calendar and an African and Caribbean Business Directory, supporting economic visibility and enterprise activity within the communities it serves.
What Jambo Radio Delivers
Accessibility Jambo Radio addresses barriers to participation, both cultural and economic, through two complementary strands of activity.
Its culturally specific programming ensures that members of Scotland's African and Caribbean heritage communities can access information, representation and connection in their own language. For many, particularly newer arrivals, older community members, or those navigating significant life transitions, this accessibility is not incidental. It is essential. It reduces isolation, builds confidence and creates a genuine sense of inclusion in Scottish civic life.
On a practical level, Jambo delivers structured volunteering, placement and apprenticeship programmes for young people at school, college and university, providing industry-relevant experience across audio and video production, content creation, graphic design, communications and marketing, studio production management, and business administration.
Connectivity The station's physical hub on Gordon Street, Glasgow, is more than an operational base. It is a recognised safe space and creative environment where young people can develop skills, build social and professional networks and grow the confidence to transition into employment or further education.
Across Scotland, Jambo Radio's programming and community outreach actively connects individuals within and between cities, supporting social cohesion and reducing the isolation that can disproportionately affect diaspora communities. The relationships and networks it facilitates have lasting value for individuals, for families, and for the communities they are part of.
Community Impact The impact Jambo Radio has on its communities is both broad and deep. It supports young people taking their first steps into professional life. It provides a route back to the workplace for those who have come to Scotland with significant experience and qualifications but face structural barriers to workplace re-engagement. And through its broadcasting, it consistently and publicly affirms that African and Caribbean heritage, culture and identity have a rightful and valued place in Scottish society.
These are not soft outcomes. Cultural confidence, social connection and a sense of belonging are directly linked to educational attainment, employment participation and long-term economic contribution. Jambo Radio is delivering on all of these fronts.
